An update on another Classmate no longer with us - Bill Macaskill

I received a note from another of our esteemed classmates ....John Robertson ...out there in Evanston, IL..... He had an unfortunate addition to our BLOG  regarding a sad note that Bill Macaskill is also on our IN MEMORIUM listing (now at 23).  John posted some circumstances on this but I will fill the class in on this later.   Just note that this is an update on the previous IN MEMORIUM to keep in your records.  John also posted some details of his own whereabouts and history and I will post more of his ventures and family in a future post.

If you wish a PDF of this set of images let me know and I can e-mail it to you.  Unfortunately, this BLOG system does not upload PDFs and only allows true image formats ....technology!!...always behind what we want!

My prayers go out to all on the list and I remember Bill very well.  Many of you might remember he was a reporter for our Peraltan Magazine and in his junior year he went to Richmond High to report on a basketball game at that campus.  Bill and others were confronted but some disgruntled students after SM walked away with another WIN and Bill was attacked and cut with a can opener on his face.  He was a fun and life-is-full kind of guy when I knew him at SM.  I lost touch with him after graduation but if you have stories about Bill - we all want to know them.  Please also remember our others listed and tell us their stories too.

In memory of Bill Macaskill,

Brian

How to POST to this BLOG - and include pictures!!

To All:   Many are wondering how to post to this blog and I hope this will help:

As "owner" of this BLOG I have an icon at the top that allows me to enter new stuff at will.  Non-Owners ("You") have to enter via a REPLY to a comment.  Just know that the reply does go to the already present comment but it is also registered as a new entity to the BLOG.  So....at the bottom of any entry is a series of little icons...(see below).... they are "M" for "G-Mail", "B" for "comment to the above note", "T" for "Twitter", "F" is for "Facebook", and "P" for "Pinterest".....some of these icons/programs you might know but the main one to use is "B".   Click on the "B" and a new comment field comes up .....there is a "title bar" with the title of the previous comment and some content from the previous comment is there too...erase /delete these characters and change them to your new title and then go to the bigger entry field and enter "your story", "your comment", etc....whatever you wish to say to all of us.  You can post a picture (or several pictures) using the icon in the comment menu bar that has a small picture icon.  Click on that picture icon (the one after "Link") and a selection field comes up.  The photo selection tool comes up to "Choose" the picture(s) from your computer.  Choose your files off your computer and click on the "Add Selected" button ...then "Publish" your posting.....  Yes...it is easy!!!

Yes...use the "B" button on the page (shown below as the second icon after the "M") and you are good to go.
Problems....e-mail me at bmoyernh@gmail.com and I can help or you can send me your text and images too and I can upload them for you.
My best to all,
Brian

Jim Burns is one lucky guy with retirement now achieved and what a family!

James E Burns has been one lucky guy with marriage to his sweetheart, Sue, now some 40+ years later and a family of three - two girls (Jennifer and Joanie.....his sister is also named Joan...and do you remember his older brother Peter?) and  son (Jimmy) and now a plethora of grandchildren.  A picture - a Christmas Card - is a testament to this fine fellow.

Maybe some remember the tale of a Christmas Eve dinner at Jim's home where his mom and dad ...great Irish people they were .... hosted a few of us SMCHS guys to a memorable night.

In short....Jim;s dog ....name forgotten by me... tagged a skunk in the back yard behind a utility shed that was overgrown with vines that trapped the dog and the skunk.  The dog AND the skunk were both passed out back there from the smell and some of us more foolish sorts climbed back of the shed to pull the living beasts out into fresh air.... WHEWW ...and PEEEUHHHH!  It stank up everything.... the skunk woke and tore out of the area and Jim's dog looked like a hungover lad who could not find his way.  Long story short...tomato sauce bath  upstairs and needless to say the house was transformed for many a day.  When I got home that night I had to disrobe in the backyard and took a long soapy shower that was minimally effective....  A night at the Burn's can be anything but typical !!!!

The John Lineweaver Story - How to be blessed with 27 Grandchildren and 14 Greatgrandchildren

A Post by John Lineweaver on his “Family Outing” this past summer to Utah:

I took my family on our 4th Family "Cruise" this past Summer, but this time we didn't exactly sail anywhere----rather, I reserved 13 RV's and flew 54 of my children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and assorted spouses and cousins into Salt Lake City, Utah, where we began our adventure. I had driven my RV and U Haul Trailer from California to Salt Lake with camping gear and supplies for everyone, and we met and stocked up at Salt Lake City. We then drove as a caravan to Yellowstone National Park, and then onto Mt. Rushmore National Park, covering some 2500 miles in 12 days. If you want all the blow-by-blow details, I will try to get Brian to help me figure out how to post my LIMA CRUISE blog.  (John….I will get your blog up on this site…I promise!!)

Notes from Brian:  John and I have been friends a very long time – since 4th grade – and he and his wife Rose were married three weeks before Carol and I were married in 1981.  John married into a 10 children family and brought an adopted son along with him into this marriage.  They had a son of their own, Danny, who at the age of two climbed out of his crib but hanged on a corner post leaving him severely brain damaged.  He passed away at the age of 12.  In the depth of their tragedy they formed a Foundation to educate on children and cribs and to rid the country through legislation of all cribs with cornerposts that can catch clothing. They were highly successful and this brought joy and immense satisfaction that they had prevented additional injuries and deaths.  In all their joy as a large and wonderfully blessed family, Rose passed away suddenly in September 2012.  One of the most difficult times in my life was trying to understand how this could happen and how to support John being 3000 miles away.  John is one of the most giving men I have known in my life and he is a magnificent family man.  Witness in these pictures how any of you would cope with 27 Grandchildren and 14 Great-grandchildren!!!!

A Note from Howard Osborne --- living the good Midwestern Story......

Hey Classmates,   here is a message from Howard (“Howie”) Osborne for everyone…..
He will be sending pictures soon and I will upload them to this site.

Hello Everyone,

This is Howard Osborne also checking in, and I would like to say that this is an extremely enjoyable experience for me personally to step into my past of 50 years ago, which I shared with you guys.
In some cases, this reconnecting is taking me back to elementary school, Saint Augustine's, where I was also with some of you.  We're talking the 1950's. Incredible.
Over the years I have thought about everyone, and wondered how things are with each of us.  Often it brought a smile, and sometimes much laughter, thinking about what it was like being 14-18 year olds.
It didn't take me long after graduation to realize how fortunate I was to have had the Saint Mary's experience. The teachers we had, being with you guys, and the study of our Faith, gave me just what I needed.  I learned a way of being that helped me greatly throughout my life and with my career.
I have lived in a small town in the mid west for the past 30 years, where I have been teaching in alternative schools.  Laurel Lee, my dear wife, and I have 4 children who are now all in their 30's.  We are very proud of them.  They are very dear to us.
We live a quiet and content life.  Laurel Lee paints and I read a lot.
My thanks to you, Boero, for all you have done over the years for Saint Mary's and all the alumni.  Good work.
Thanks to you, also, Brian, for posting the blogs etc. to help re enliven our contact with each other.  And a special thanks to you, Brian and Boero, for the Memorial to our classmates.  It was very powerful and moving for me to see this.
The best to all of you men.

Lary Henkel's Story

Here is another story sent by Lary Henkel to my e-mail....
My info....hmmm.  I attended Oakland City College just out of St. Mary's, got my AA in Law Enforcement while continuing my job at the Drug store where I had worked since my freshman year in H.S.  Coincidentally, I finally got out of OCC when the drug store closed so, with the draft breathing down my neck I joined the Marine Corps on a 3 year enlistment.  Long story short, after some specialized training, I headed off to Vietnam where I lasted 10 months out of my 13 month tour, was wounded, medevaced to Guam for two months in the Naval Hospital and sent back to the States for my last year at Marine Barracks, Naval Air Station, Alameda.
Upon discharge in April, '67, I applied and was accepted as a clerk with the FBI in San Francisco, transferred to Sacramento office in'71 where I worked in the FBI office nights and completed my degree in Criminal Justice at Cal State, Sacramento.  I then took the test for FBI Agent and was off to Quantico for New Agent's class in '73.  While in Sacramento I met my future wife, Kathleen and upon graduation from Special Agent's training and on my way to my first office assignment in Los Angeles, Kathleen and I were married.
While in L.A. we adopted two spectacular girls, Leslie and Lauren and, in 1989 I was transferred to the Sacramento FBI office where I served out my time and retired in 2001.  In short, the FBI career was amazing.  I worked a huge variety of matters from fugitives to copyrights, national security and was privileged to be involved in security planning for the 1984 Summer Olympics in L.A. and the 2000 Summer Olympics track and field trials in Sacramento.  Kathleen worked for the FBI for 10 years and was a paralegal in L.A. for a time.  Back in Sacramento she became involved in the American Endurance Ride Conference, a long distance horse riding group, and has served as it's executive director for the last 21 years.
After retirement I started my own private investigative business and have worked part time for Home Instead Senior Care as an in-home caregiver.  My oldest daughter,  Leslie is a graduate of UC San Diego with a degree in visual media arts.  She worked a variety of jobs

in the bay area, taught English in Japan for a time and eventually, settled in Brooklyn, is married and expecting her first baby in July.   She works as a program administrator for the Parsons school of  design in New York.  A couple years ago, Leslie and 4 friends and a dog, sailed across the Pacific to New Zealand over about an 8 month period.  Lauren, the youngest is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara with a degree in communications.  She worked for a time for a company which wrote travel programs for students traveling abroad.  She is a world traveler herself having studied for a time in Costa Rica and having traveled extensively through Central America, Italy, Spain, Bali, Mexico and New Zealand among some other places I am surely forgetting.  She is also a certified nutritionist and worked for a time with Global Brigades in Ghana alongside doctors, nurses and other medical professionals providing medical assistance to the local populace.  She currently lives in Sonoma and works in Santa Rosa.  Well, that is much too long but there you have the Henkel history, post St. Mary's.     Lary Henkel

Brian McGuire's Story ....A Danish life with a dash of St Mary's flair....

SMClass of '64.....I have received a wonderful e-mail from our own Brian McQuire who lives and teaches at the University (...I will get more to add here) over in Denmark and I wanted to get his initial story and pictures up on the Blog today..... enjoy!....and he will be at the Reunion....

Dear Brian (as well as Mike and Lynn, and Bob!)
I don't know how to do this blog business, but here are some pictures to provide you all with an update 50 years later!  You are welcome to put what follows on the blog!
You will see my wife of 44 years, Ann Pedersen, together with my father's second wife, Margaret Keane, the artist, who now lives in Napa. There is supposed to be a Hollywood film about her life that will be out this autumn, based on her marriage with Walter Keane, who victimized her and claimed he painted half her paintings by himself.  She (Margaret, not Ann!) has become a Jehovah's Witness so she and I talk a lot about the Bible!
You also see our son Christian Sung Dan Pedersen, adopted from Seoul Korea when he was five months old in 1980. He and his Greek-Danish girlfriend will at the end of June bring a son into the world, so I will become a grandfather, a status that many of the class of '64 long since have had.
The picture of Christian and myself together was taken at Seven Falls, on a trail behind Tucson, Arizona, where my youngest sister, Mary Ann, lives. You also see us with the nuns of Saint Rita Abbey, a Trappist-Cistercian monastery south of Tucson. I go around visiting Cistercian houses and give talks about the history of the order--and will be doing so at New Clairvaux in Vina, near Chico, after the reunion.
The house in a couple of pictures is the old farmhouse where we have lived since 1997, on the western end of the island of Zealand, where Copenhagen is at the east end.
I still don't know if Ann will be accompanying me--I have bought air tickets for us both but she will not commit herself because of all the cats whose lives depend on us. We'll see, but in any case I am looking forward to seeing you all. I attended our 5th and our 40th reunions, and I think it just gets better.
All good wishes,
Brian Patrick McGuire

In Memorium is a challenge to bring this topic up ....but it is an important aspect of our Reunion.  These are the faces that will miss this opportunity...gone before their time, really.  They needed to be with us and every effort is going to be made to make sure they ARE with us in June.

Here are the faces...without their stories.....please fill in these stories for them...we need to hear the stories and it must come from us....their classmates.

I begin with placing their names and faces before each of us.... they are our brothers...they are our classmates ....they are St. Mary's Men..... All OF THEM.....
